Abstract

|
Freud frequently made use of various metaphorical or figurative discourses in his many works. Although his metaphor seems to be somewhat rough and cool, we can identify the paradoxical coexistence of a good sense of humor and skeptical pessimism. In particular, he used the metaphor of troop and surgery, which seems to reflect his sociocultural background. The use of metaphor is not always successful, and we can see that Freud¡¯s metaphor was not always appropriate. As in the mirror metaphor, some figures brought about unnecessary misunderstandings. Nevertheless Freud did overwhelm and persuade the general public using his own characteristic writing styles. The use of metaphor has a strong power to persuade non-professionals in the populace. The primary misunderstandings and criticisms of Freud were made not by the general public, but rather by professional groups. We can appreciate Freud¡¯s personal and human aspects, including his weak and vulnerable points through his various metaphorical discourses. Thus, he can truly be regarded as a brave man because nobody could uncover the weaknesses or faults in his theories.
